Israel

Israel is 64 years old today.

I don't suppose many people hearing David Ben-Gurion read the declaration of independence in 1948 seriously believed it would last this long. And of course many people wish it hadn't.

This blog is broadly (but not unconditionally) supportive of Israel although it acknowledges that the Israelis make it as difficult as possible to be so.

My advice would be for Israel to try to stay out of the news, although this will be hard. The West may need Israel to attack Iran this year, just as it needed Israel to initiate attacks on Suez in 1956.

Let's hope not.

VIUSITORS to SOuthern California - near LAX internaitonal Airport could find some surprises at a restaurant near North [rtwin] Runways called "The Proud Bird"!

In the day, it was "the retirement fund" for all Continental Airlines employees - Hence "The Proud Bird -- with The Golden Tail" moniker, as that airline was favorably known and flown here.

Then in a world of corporate mergers and lay-offs which always follow in U.S. -- but not in Canada == SPECIALTY RESTAURANTS chain then offered Continental employees "a deal they could not - and did not -- refuse"! ;-)

IN FRONT of main entrance are no less than THREE Canadian [RCAF] squadron insignia[e]: Commending those three units which pilots "flew with Israel" -- during the 'War for Independence', against Great Britain colonialism.

So when Israeli President SHIMON PERES visited Canada recently - Ther were rumors he had asnit' with EL AL, which would not allow oxygen bottles to be carried aboard for safety of PERES!

The rumor -- not confirmed by Canadian news media -- was that PERES flew on "Air Canada" into Ottawa, where the Canadian Prime Minister [The Hon. Stephen Harper] greeted him at plane side with the words: "ISRAEL HAS NO GREATER FRIEND THAN CANADA IN THIS WORLD"!
